Labelexpo in September marked the trade show debut of the new Gallus One digital label press.Gallus One is designed to remove the total cost of ownership (TCO) barrier for the adoption of reel-to-reel digital labels with the highest level of automation and cloud-based technologies.
Following Labelexpo Europe, the press was revealed for the first time to the North American market at the PRINTING United Expo in Atlanta, GA.
L&NW recently sat down with Steven Calov, HEIDELBERG USA's digital product manager, to learn more about the Gallus One.
L&NW: How would you assess the current state of digital printing within the label and narrow web segment?
SC: According to “Labels Market Outlook" – The global label market size is set to reach a valuation of $41.75 billion in 2023 and accelerate at a CAGR of 4.9% from 2023 to 2033. The market is projected to reach $67.36 billion by the end of 2033. The opportunity in the label market for growth potential in the coming years is staggering. The inkjet market is ripe for growth as we see it today with customers looking to accommodate short run jobs, multiple SKUs with variable data. Investments in inkjet technology will increase as the market grows and expands. For customers to achieve their margin and revenue targets, which is difficult with traditional flexo equipment, they will need to invest in inkjet technology.
L&NW: With regard to inkjet in particular, how has the technology evolved over the years?
SC: The market and engineering are driving innovations. Customers are pushing more toward TCO to meet customer needs and internal revenue margins. You need to think differently in your design. Inkjet heads are just one component of the entire process. The other crucial step is the uptime of the investment. The Gallus One engineers took this into account in the overall design and automated many manual procedures. For example; ultrasonic cleaning of the heads, patented web control tension, vision system for missing nozzles, automatic high precision inline registration, easy to use HMI, HEIDELBERG developed inks CMYK plus white at 85% opacity at 230 fpm (70 m/m), PRINECT software, predictive monitoring just to name a few.
L&NW: The Gallus One digital press recently launched at Labelexpo Europe. Can you describe the press and the advantages it provides label converters as well as brand owners?
SC: HEIDELBERG Gallus has evolved with inkjet technology with the introduction of the Gallus Labelfire platform over the past 10 years ago. The Gallus One introduced to the market is based on the successful Labelmaster platform. This is our building block to expand our offering in the future.
The combination of our market research, the installed base knowledge and customer input and new engineering concepts brought this new platform to the market. Our goal with the Gallus One is provide the customer with the lowest TCO and achieving the highest utilization by automating routine tasks. Utilizing 100 years of label expertise and sophisticated engineering, Gallus One offers a complete digital label solution, including all the software and hardware necessary to produce high quality, profitable digital labels all from HEIDELBERG Gallus. All this, with the highest level of automation available, and the most competitive TCO.
L&NW: The Gallus One just made its North American debut at the Printing United Expo. How was it received by show attendees? How was the event overall for HEIDELBERG?
SC: The Printing United event was successful for the HEIDELBERG group. Interesting enough the visitors that attended our Gallus One presentation were from the traditional label market as well as offset customers looking to bridge into additional revenue streams. Overall we have a positive outlook for the Gallus One based on the comments from the attendees.
L&NW: What are the advantages of partnering with HEIDELBERG for those looking at investing in a new digital asset?
SC: The benefit for partnering with HEIDELBERG Gallus is our Ecosystem. The Ecosystem encompasses a complete solution — not just a standalone print engine. Within the new Gallus One ecosystem, users have state of the art inkjet technology, a new Gallus One ink set, higher press utilization, sophisticated workflow software, cloud- based software and a new predictive press monitoring service to ensure minimum press downtime. All these elements work in harmony, enabling an increase in press efficiency and productivity.
